Position: Harvesting Labourer

This is a Canada Summer Jobs position for the duration of 8 weeks, 35 hours per week. To be eligible, candidates must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period;

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,

  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Terms of Employment:

  • Temporary Full Time – 35 hours/wk - $17.40/hour

  • Monday – Friday; from June 2024 for 8 weeks (the position will include some Sat/Sun, depending on program delivery needs)

 

Who we are looking for:

 

Community garden assistant: Youth will be working at several community gardens managed by the organization. Duties include cultivation and harvesting crops to support our seniors' Meals on Wheels outreach, the Genki Gumi Wellness program, Friday Seniors Social Luncheon and several community outreach programs like Powell Street Festival food booth.

 

Community food security initiative administrative assistance: Youth will promote and educate the community on farm/food security issues - with emphasis on food support of traditional Japanese vegetables for the seniors' lunch programs. Promotion and education activities will include writing articles for the National Japanese Canadian magazine, Tonari Gumi's community newsletter and other social media. Other administrative tasks include providing administrative support at the non-profits seniors' centre.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 11 or 12 (an alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable). 

  • Experience working with not-for-profit organizations an asset.

  • Preference will be given to those with interest in Japanese culture and farming.

  • Full License and Clean Drivers Abstract is not necessary, but would be an asset.

 

Skills:

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.

  • Good communication skills.

  • Ability to manage time efficiently.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Must enjoy outdoor field work.
