Position: General Farm Assistant

This is a Canada Summer Jobs position for the duration of 8 weeks, 37.5 hours per week. To be eligible, candidates must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period;

  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment ; and,

  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Terms of Employment:

  • Temporary Full Time – 37.5 hours/wk - $17.00/hour

  • Monday – Friday; from June, 2022 for 8 weeks (the position will include some Sat/Sun, depending on program delivery needs)

Who we are looking for:

Community garden assistance: Youth will be working at several community gardens managed by the organization. Duties will include cultivating, irrigating and harvesting crops to support the Meals-on-Wheels lunch program for ethnic seniors.

Community food security initiative administrative assistance: Youth will track the progress of food production, and promote and educate the community on the farm/food security project - with emphasis on the food support for the Tonari Gumi Seniors’ lunch program. Promotion and education activities include writing articles for the National Japanese Canadian magazine as a guest student columnist, Tonari Gumi’s community newsletter and on the organization's social media. Other administrative tasks include providing administrative support at the non-profit's seniors centre, in the Meals-on-Wheels program and at community events such as the Powell Street Festival food booth.

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 11 or 12 (an alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable).

  • Experience working with not-for-profit organizations an asset

  • Preference will be given to those with interest in Japanese culture and farming

  • Full License and Clean Drivers Abstract is not necessary, but would be an asset.

Skills:

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.

  • Good communication skills

  • Ability to manage time efficiently

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Must enjoy outdoor field work
