On Thursday, September 12th some 22 seniors joined together to participate in a Tonari Gumi Outreach Activity, travelling to Whistler to enjoy the spectacular late summer weather in the mountains. Led by TG Program Coordinator, Sayuri Sugawara, and assisted by Junko Takashima, the group boarded a bus rented from the Burnaby Bonsor +55 Society and Tonari Gumi’s venerable mini-van, and drove to Whistler. While in Whistler, the majority of the group took the gondola up to the top of the mountains and also enjoyed the “Peak to Peak” lift, while some of the others remained in Whistler village to enjoy the sights and shops. The day was fun filled and exhausting for some of our seniors, but a fulfilling one for everyone.
With Tonari Gumi’s current building unavailable for programming as preparations are underway for the impending move to the new building, many seniors were thrilled to be able to get together to see their Tonari Gumi friends and to enjoy each other’s company once again. Current expectations are that Tonari Gumi’s regular programs will not be able to start at the new building until late October or early November. In the meantime, some outdoor activities will continue and everyone is invited to volunteer to help us move. Our seniors are not content to just sit and wait for the new building, they are definitely reaching out and doing things to move Tonari Gumi forward.
