On Saturday November 23rd at 2:15 p.m., we will be celebrating the formal opening of our new Seniors drop-in and community outreach centre at 42 West 8th avenue in the City of Vancouver. The general public is cordially invited to attend this historic event. Tonari Gumi means neighborhood association in Japanese, and we are looking forward to this new facility becoming the neighborhood house for the Japanese Canadian community in Vancouver. Some 70 years after being unjustly removed from Vancouver and the Pacific West Coast, the Japanese Canadian community once again have a place of their own in the city of Vancouver.
Thanks to the generosity of the Tom Kusumoto family, the greater Vancouver Japanese Canadian Citizens Association (JCCA), the estate of Roger Watanaka, the Federal Department of Western Economic Diversification Canada and hundreds of companies and individuals who contributed the funds necessary to purchase and renovate this building, the Japanese Canadian community now have a new home. Please come at 2:15 p.m. this coming Saturday to see the grand opening, tour the building and learn more about the many programs and services that Tonari Gumi is providing for seniors and other generations within the Japanese Canadian community in Vancouver and the lower mainland.
