Over the past year, Tonari Gumi has introduced a number of new programs designed for Japanese-Canadians of all generations. These programs were based on the results of a community survey conducted in early 2019 and informal discussions with members of the community. The survey found that there is a strong interest among Japanese-Canadians to learn about their history, culture and language, and to meet others in the community.

To address these needs, Tonari Gumi introduced a program called “An Afternoon at TG” held on selected Saturday afternoons throughout the year. Activities included screenings of Japanese-Canadian movies, live music, English-Japanese language exchange and a walking tour of historical Steveston. These events were well-received and well-attended by a good cross-section of the community.

For 2020, we will be continuing our “Afternoon at TG” programs, which will run every other month, starting in January. As well, we will be starting informal Japanese conversation classes between January and March.

Our first two “Afternoon at TG” events will be held on January 25 and March 21. The January 25 event will bring back our popular “language buddies” program that pairs native Japanese speakers with English speakers. We are also planning a presentation on the first historical sugar beet farm tour of Southern Alberta that took place in the Fall of 2019. The March 21 event will be put on by Tonari Gumi’s Garden Club and will feature a session on growing Japanese vegetables.

Information on future events will be available on Tonari Gumi’s website and Facebook page (facebook.com/tonarigumi/)or by contacting Tonari Gumi at 604-687-2172. If you would like to be on our invitation mailing list, please send your name and contact information to: tg.spevents@gmail.com We look forward to seeing you at Tonari Gumi’s inter-generational events in the New Year!
