Tonari Gumi will be having its first Coffee House of the New Year on Saturday, February 22nd, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Doors open at 12:30 pm. Tonari Gumi is located at 42 West 8th Avenue in Vancouver. Our program will feature talented musicians from the community, playing a variety of musical styles.
Sean Gunn is an Asian-Canadian singer-songwriter / community activist who has played music for over four decades. He plays electric bass, guitar, recorder, Casio digital horn and harmonica. He occasionally performs in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and Chinatown.
Kozue Matsumoto and Yuriko Nariya will be playing a koto duet. Kozue and Yuriko are well-known koto players in the Nikkei community who have played both solo and in collaboration with other musicians.
Eiichi Ishikawa (guitar and vocals) and Nami (keyboards and vocals) play contemporary Japanese songs, including J-Pop and folk. Eiichi is a popular singer in the Japanese community. Accompanying Eiichi will be Nami on keyboards and vocals.
Tat Fukuda and the Tae Maeda Piano Trio (Tae Maeda – piano, Wayne Soon – drums and Kenn Nakamine – bass) round out the program. Tat and the Trio will play jazz standards along with modern Japanese tunes.
Admission is by donation ($5), with all proceeds going to Tonari Gumi. Please come out and support live music in our community.
