Since last year, one of the more popular programs at Tonari Gumi has been learning how to dance the hula. During the week, we have two series of hula dancing classes for seniors on Tuesdays from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. In addition, on Saturdays from 11:15 am to 12:15 pm, we have a hula dance program for the general public and those who are more agile. The benefit is that while learning to sway to the gentle island melodies, you can improve your fitness and get your daily exercise. Movements are slow and measured so there are no worries of excessive physical stress on your legs and knees.
The instructor for both of these programs is Kanako Odamura who learned hula dancing in both Hawaii and in Tokyo, directly from a Hawaiian teacher. She can teach in both English and Japanese and her principal focus is to help everyone to appreciate both the sheer enjoyment and the physical benefits of hula dancing. There are still some spaces in both the Tuesday programs for seniors and also the Saturday morning programs for the general public. Costs for seniors range from $18 to $23 for a series of 6 sessions and for the Saturday morning program, the cost is $50 for four Saturday sessions for non-seniors.
