For the first time ever, the four main Japanese Canadian community choirs, Cattleya Chorus, NAV Chorus, Sakura Singers and The Winds, joined together to present a gala concert in support of Tonari Gumi on Saturday, November 30 at the St. Matthias and St. Luke Anglican Church at 680 West 49th Ave. in Vancouver. In addition to the community choirs, they were joined by the professional North Pacific Trio consisting of Akira Nagai, Seri Nagai and Keiko Alexander. As a special treat, the Consul General of Japan, Mr. Seiji Okada, accompanied the NAV Chorus and the combined presentation of the Hallelujah Chorus at the end of the program on his sax. Some 200 enthusiastic guests attended this concert which was a fundraising event to help purchase a new mini-van for Tonari Gumi to be used to help more seniors and others to benefit from Tonari Gumi’s programs and services. Everyone agreed that it was a fabulous event to bring the community together and to start the Christmas Season. Many thanks to Midori Seo and Chris Nakahori for their organisation of the concert, Kuniko Naito director of the Cattleya Chorus, Akira Nagai who conducted the NAV and combined chorus, Ruth Suzuki director of the Sakura Singers and Moko Kuwabara director of The Winds. Thanks also go to all those who provided raffle prizes, refreshments and supported this event.
