A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Tonari Gumi!

We’re now “at home” in our new facilities at 42 West 8th Avenue in Vancouver. IMG_0002On Friday, December 20th we had our annual Seniors’ Christmas Party with close to 70 seniors gathering for our traditional “gochisou” lunch IMG_0017with lots of food both prepared by Tonari Gumi and also brought to the party by volunteers and guests. It was another special event for our seniors with games and prizes to go with the good food and good friends. We expect that this party will be one of the many that we will enjoy in our new building into the future.

Also, we’d like to introduce our new Community Service Coordinator, Mariko Takashina, who will be taking overIMG_0150 from Shihori who has provided dedicated service in this position for the past 5 years. Shihori will be going on to even more productive pursuits as she and her husband are expecting their first baby near the end of January. Mariko, who was born in Ehime-ken, comes with excellent qualifications, having been a school teacher in Japan, raised two teenaged children as a single parent, and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Education. We’re extremely pleased to welcome her as a member of the Tonari Gumi team.

Come and visit our new facilities in 2014 and look for our new and revamped programs and activities in the New Year.
