2015 January to March Program Guide

1 CoverWe’re excited to introduce our new 2015 January to March Program Guide which introduces close to 40 different programs, workshops, clubs and activities to be held at Tonari Gumi over the next three months. What’s also exciting is that while many of the day-time programs are geared specifically for seniors, we also have a variety of activities on Saturdays which are specifically for the general public and for non-seniors.

For Seniors: there are a wide variety of activities taking place at Tonari Gumi ranging from the

traditional “radio taiso” exercise program to our very popular tablet computer classes. Among our new programs is a Photo Club Project where seniors can upgrade their digital camera skills while taking photos of their community based on a specific theme chosen by themselves.

For Non-Seniors: there is our family drop-in program for parents and their pre-school children, now taking place on Tuesday mornings. For the more active, on Saturdays, there is a dumbbell and stretch exercise program and a hula dancing program which are designed for non-seniors and the general public. Also in 2015 there is our new Nikkei Plus Social Club, IMG_0003which takes place once a month on Saturdays and brings Nikkei of all generations together to share food, games, nostalgic stories and good times.

Tonari Gumi’s 2nd Annual Afternoon Tea is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 21. Everyone will be able to savour their tea in fine English china and munch on delicious sandwiches, scones, cakes and pastries against a backdrop of fine entertainment.

Japanese & English: Tonari Gumi activities and events are definitely not limited to fluent Japanese speakers. If you can manage some very basic Japanese, most of the programs, workshops & activities are accessible to you. In addition, there are a number of programs such as the Homebound and Lighthouse Iki Iki programs which are conducted in both English and Japanese. Also many of our instructors are bilingual and their programs are specifically indicated (J/E) in the program guide. If you have any questions whether or not a class is appropriate for you, don’t hesitate to contact staff to ask. Really look forward to welcoming many more new participants to our programs in 2015.
