The Vancouver Powell Street Festival has been Canada’s premier Japanese Canadian summer festival for more than three decades. While this year’s festival was a bit different from previous years, being deprived of accessing Oppenheimer Park due to a “camp-in” taking place in support of the homeless, this year’s Powell Street Festival literally took to the streets. Everything that used to be situated in the park now lined Jackson Ave. and Alexander street and became more of a street festival.
Despite the change, thousands came to the festival to enjoy Japanese food and culture and to meet others from within the community. Tonari Gumi was there in force again and many dozens of volunteers helped to raise funds and awareness of Tonari Gumi programs & services.
